Marlins on the Move: Heart, Hustle, and a Whole Lot of Pride!

Dear Marlins Families,

What an electric meet! The Marlins delivered another thrilling performance this weekend with a final score of 181.5 to 183.5—just a hair’s breadth away! Every race was a heart-pounding display of growth, skill, and team spirit, and we couldn’t be more proud of how far we've come!

Our strokes are sharper, our starts are cleaner, and the fact that none of our 8 & unders DQ’d in breaststroke—especially when the opposing team had several—is a testament to the discipline and dedication our young swimmers are developing. That’s not just progress—it’s excellence in motion!

Despite being outnumbered by more than a dozen swimmers, we held our own and nearly clinched the win. That kind of edge comes from smart strategy, consistent guidance, and the steady hand of our amazing coaches, Mercedes and Vanessa! Their dedication to refining strokes, building confidence, and pushing each swimmer to rise to the challenge made such a difference in a tight meet.

We also want to take a moment to highlight Caleb Tenney and his wonderful tenure with the Montpelier Marlins! You will be missed, but we know you have wonderful things for your future!!

To our timing volunteers—you were phenomenal! The head judge from Russett called it “the best timing I’ve seen all season,” and we couldn’t agree more! You brought the precision and professionalism that sets our meets apart. Thank you for showing up and making each race run like clockwork.

Special gratitude to Josh Rojas for stepping into the 50/50 raffle role last-minute and knocking it out of the park! Every bit of support counts, and we see you. And to all our parent volunteers—thank you. Your energy behind the scenes makes these meets feel smooth, professional, and unforgettable. Our swimmers shine brighter because of the foundation you build each week.

Looking ahead, we’ve got two fast and furious weeks—Aqua Ducks Mini Meet for our 10 & unders, and the exciting Laurel Invitationals. Please be on the lookout for messages regarding seeding of swimmers. We’ll be finalizing our seeds Sunday, July 6, so get ready to charge ahead!

This team is becoming something truly special, and we couldn’t be prouder to be a part of it! Let’s keep riding this wave!

Go Marlins!

With gratitude and excitement,

- The Marlins Swim Committee

From the Coaches:

What an incredible meet! We’re so proud of the heart, hustle, and team spirit every swimmer brought to the pool. Whether it was cheering on a teammate, pushing through a tough race, or bouncing back from a setback—you all showed what it means to compete with courage and character! You made this meet great! Your energy, effort, and attitude continue to inspire us as coaches!

We’re looking forward to another strong week ahead—let’s keep building, keep supporting one another, and keep having fun. Let’s go, Marlins!

From the Officials:

Since we’ve recently had a few swimmers experience injuries, we want to share some important information regarding the use of tape during competition.

You may not realize it, but the rules around tape are very specific—and for good reason. They help ensure a level playing field for all athletes, while also keeping swimmers safe. That said, we also know that as parents, you're concerned with doing what's best for your swimmer's well-being—so here's what you need to know.

🩹 Can My Swimmer Wear Tape During a Meet?

In short: Only certain types of tape are permitted—and some require approval from the Referee before the meet starts.

If your swimmer needs to wear any kind of tape, please be sure to let their coach know in advance so they can inform the Referee before the meet begins. According to USA Swimming Article 102.8.1E, “Any kind of tape on the body is not permitted unless approved by the Referee.”

✅ Tape That Is Generally Permitted:

Wound Protection & Closure

Small bandages (Band-Aids, butterfly strips, gauze, etc.) are typically okay with no prior notice. However, if the tape is large or wraps entirely around a limb (like the arm or leg), please alert the Referee ahead of time.

Finger/Toe Taping

“Buddy taping” of no more than two fingers or toes is usually allowed. Advanced notice to the Referee is recommended.

Securing Medical or Religious Items

Tape used to secure medical alert bracelets, religious objects, or pendants is permitted—with prior notification encouraged.

Medical Devices

Tape that secures necessary medical devices (like insulin pumps or ostomy bags) is allowed—but must be disclosed to the Referee beforehand.

❌ Tape That Is Never Permitted:

Elastic Therapeutic Tape (e.g., RockTape)

Kinesio Taping

Compression or Support Tape on muscles, ligaments, tendons, or joints (unless it falls into one of the approved exceptions above)

Even a doctor’s note does not override these rules—these types of tape are not allowed in competition under any circumstances.

🧠 Why It Matters

As officials, our top priorities are swimmer safety and the integrity of the sport. By following these guidelines and ensuring coaches are aware of any medical needs ahead of time, we can keep things safe, legal, and fair for everyone. We also understand that injuries can be discouraging. If your child is recovering, we’re here to support them. Keeping the lines of communication open with coaches and meet officials ensures we can help in the best and most appropriate way.

If you have any questions, concerns, or would like further clarification, feel free to reach out—we’re always happy to help.

Thank you for your continued partnership, your understanding, and for supporting your swimmer every step of the way.

🌊 Team Highlights & Gratitude

Almost perfect attendance! This makes a tremendous difference—especially in relays where every swimmer counts. Your presence boosts our competitiveness and team chemistry.

Huge thanks to Anna Childers for running concessions—walking tacos were a crowd favorite and kept both bellies and hearts full!

Shout-out to Lulu Rodriguez for continuing to guide and develop our outstanding officials. To all our volunteer officials—thank you for your time, focus, and professionalism on deck!

Musa Kposowa rocked the DJ booth—your music kept us energized and dancing throughout!

A big thanks to Paula Rojas, who welcomed every guest with a smile and kept perfect track of our swimmers at the entrance!

❤️ Wishing a Speedy Recovery

We missed you, Anna Hughes! Your presence in the pool brings energy and strength—we can’t wait to have you back. Get well soon!

💪 Swimmer Strength

To all the swimmers who showed grit—like jumping in the pool only to have goggles fly off and still pushing through—bravo. These are the moments that define not just athletes, but champions!

🧰 Post-Meet Volunteers & Action Items

We can’t say enough about our amazing parent volunteers who help clean up after the meet. Every set of hands makes a difference. A few reminders to keep things smooth:

Please keep tent bags stored near tents so we’re not scrambling during take-down.

When winding up the flags, make sure they don’t touch the water—otherwise, we have to leave them out to dry.

Use our meet set up binder in the garage to make sure all equipment is returned to its proper place.

No one checks out until all equipment and responsibilities are complete. Many hands = fast finish!

Let’s carry this momentum forward through the rest of the season and Divisionals! The dedication you all show—both in and out of the pool—is what makes this team special! Keep showing up, cheering loud, and helping out. Together, we swim stronger!
